Admittedly, I’ve never been all that worried about viruses for my own computer because I use a Macintosh computer exclusively.  Until recently.

No, my Mac didn’t get the viurs, but one of my clients’ web page did, as did some PCs who clicked on her page! Because many of my clients know one another and I receive many referrals via networking, I encourage all of my clients who use PCs to have their computers scrubbed and cleaned!

So how did this happen, what are the risks, and how can you clean your computer?

This particular “Malware” virus was initiated through a PC that also had access to a client’s web site via FTP, and most likely, had that FTP password stored in a “keychain” or password-saving  mechanism on their PC that was exploited.

Here’s the scenario.

PC #1 gets a virus that finds a saved FTP password on the host computer.  The virus logs on to that Web Site and looks for pages like index.html, then inserts itself and makes all sorts of pages and links and copies itself slyly on the web site.

PC #2 goes to visit the web site, and gets a message of “Oh No!  There’s a virus here!  You better check your computer and clean it!” You then get lots of things to click on, including a cancel button, but at that point, ANYTHING you click starts the downloading of the virus on your PC.  Then the virus hunts for stored passwords on YOUR PC to see what kind of havok it can cause.  Maybe a web site, maybe an email account, etc.

Lots of you may be “carriers” of a virus, and you just don’t know it.

So what can you do?

For all of my clients, I’ve teamed up with Call That Girl! – a computer support and repair company in the Twin Cities that does nation-wide call in support.  Lisa of Call That Girl is a professional who will use many tools available to her to scrub and clean your PC of malicious viruses, trojan horses, spyware, etc.  She’s even agreed to help all folks who are clients of mine at a discount, starting at just $25 for a basic “cleaning” of those nasty viruses.

Please call her today at 952-681-7969, and mention HolisticGeek to receive this discount!

  1. $25 Really? oh my why should people pay for that since most of them can do that it>This is ridiculious.

  2. Thanks for your comment Errin!
$25 for a personal service for busy home users or professionals is actually very inexpensive. Lisa has a wide variety of tools that she has licensed to help her customers. Plus, Lisa’s been finding that some of the built-in or bundled virus software with PCs or internet service are not 100% effective in eliminating every virus or spyware problem that a user might encounter. Plus, not everyone wants to take the time to download multiple tools or purchase multiple virus prevention software licenses while their home PC is in a state of disarray. A personal service from an expert at $25, to me, is a great value!
