It’s time to prepare

Now that gas prices here in the US have climbed to $3/gallon, one thing that isn’t being emphasized is the impact that WINTER will have on gas prices, the economy, and everyone’s budget. Experts anticipate that oil will go up to $100/barrel this winter as folks use more to heat their homes. This means even higher prices at the pump, AND higher fuel bills this winter. However, there are some things that everyone can do to reduce their heating bills.
- If you don’t have one already, install a programmable thermostat! I’ve read that only about 11% of households have these installed. Spending $50-100 on one of these will save you money quickly! Program your furnace to a lower temperature at night, or even to turn it off for the hours that you are at work every day. You can probably save up to 30% or more on your heating all winter by doing just this!
- Caulk and weather strip your doors and windows.
- Install ceiling fans. We all know that heat rises, so combat that by running a ceiling fan in reverse to keep the warmer air down and circulated throughout your home.
- Install a water-saving shower head. If you use half the water, you only have to heat that half.
- Turn down hot water heaters to 120 degrees. Install a thermal blanket around it.
- Change your furnace filter!
- Keep your car’s tires at the proper inflation and pressure. Winter’s atmospheric changes can cause your tire pressure to fluctuate. Check your tires once a week. You’ll get better gas mileage.
- Drive 55mph! Slow down and get better fuel efficiency.
- Put together your emergency pack NOW. Candles, matches, flashlights, a battery powered radio and batteries, extra canned food and water, and blankets. If the power goes out in winter, you may need these items! Make sure you have an emergency pack in your car as well.
We all don’t have the luxury of wonderful public transit, access to a Prius. However, if we all did a little bit, it could make a big impact.
